Lincoln Business Club is inviting members of the city’s business community to put their burning questions to MP Karl McCartney and Leader of City of Lincoln Council Ric Metcalfe.

On Friday 27th April, Lincoln Business Club’s monthly meeting will be a Q&A style event giving members the opportunity to discuss issues affecting businesses in the city with the Lincoln MP and the Leader of the Council.

They’ll also be able to find out what each politician’s priorities for Lincoln are and their plans for economic growth.

Karl McCartney, Conservative Party Member of Parliament since May 2010, is involved in a number of Lincoln-based organisations, charities and voluntary sector groups.

Ric Metcalfe meanwhile has served on the city council since 1982 and was Leader of the Council between 1999 and 2007. He returned to the role when Labour regained control of the council in May 2011.

Karl said he’s very much looking forward to attending: “I’m delighted to have been invited along with Cllr Ric Metcalfe to the Q&A session on 27th April organised by the Lincoln Business Club to discuss my aspirations and priorities as the Member of Parliament for the City of Lincoln.

“I am also looking forward to taking questions from the business community in our city and am grateful for the opportunity to listen to their views and comments on how the recent Budget will affect them. My meetings with the Lincoln Business Club are always enjoyable affairs and I am relishing the chance to meet with them again.”

Council Leader Ric Metcalfe added:” Growing the local economy is a top priority for the City of Lincoln Council. I am delighted to have the opportunity to discuss how we can achieve this with leading local business representatives.”

Richard Hare, Chairman of Lincoln Business Club, said: “Having our local MP and council leader at our meeting for a Q&A is an exciting opportunity for Lincoln business owners to voice their opinions to the most important people for change – our local representatives.

“We hope the April meeting will be the first of many open forum sessions with local leaders and policy makers,” he added.

Business club members can submit their questions for Mr McCartney and Mr Metcalfe before the meeting by emailing info@lincolnbusinessclub.co.uk as well as on the day.

Lincoln Business Club is a not-for-profit, voluntary organisation that provides networking opportunities for the city’s business community and currently has over 600 members.

The club meets at Lincoln City Football Club on the last Friday of every month at 7am. You don’t have to be a member to attend and entrance costs just £3.

A cheque for £200 was presented to representatives from each charity by club Chairman Richard Hare during the monthly networking meeting at Lincoln City Football Club on Sincil Bank on 27th January.

The two local organisations were nominated by Lincoln Business Club members to receive the cheques.

KIDS Strut is a Lincolnshire-based disabled children’s charity that provides play and leisure services to disabled children and young people in and around the county.

“We are incredibly thankful to the Lincoln Business Club for its generosity,” said KIDS Strut representative Andrea Willoughby, who received the £200 cheque on behalf of the charity.

Andrea added: “Donations such as this allow us to continue offering our services to local families by helping children and young people with disabilities enjoy valuable fun and friendship through our activities.”

Chief Executive Officer Stacey Gillott accepted the cheque for the Pelican Trust, an organisation that provides meaningful work experience and on-the-job training, job-seeking skills and guidance to adults with disabilities or the long-term unemployed in Lincolnshire.

Stacey said: “The Pelican Trust is extremely pleased to be nominated as one of Lincoln Business Club’s chosen charities. As one of the city’s oldest independent charities, we are grateful for any donation and the opportunity to network to attract new customers to use our commercial departments, as many of the LBC members already do.

“The club’s donation will be used towards our annual summer outing when we take our learners out for the day to say thank you for all their hard work. These days out are a great opportunity to have fun and socially mix with our learners.”

Lincoln Business Club is a not-for-profit, voluntary organisation that provides networking opportunities for the city’s business community and currently has over 600 members.

The club has been running since 2003 and was founded by local business people who decided that Lincoln needed an inexpensive and relaxed forum for local business people to meet. The majority of members’ entrance and sponsorships fees are donated to good causes, such as KIDS Strut and Pelican Trust.

Club Chairman Richard Hare said: “It’s very important that we, as a club and as business people, are able to give our support to local charities.

“We plan to continue to give back to the community during 2012 by raising and donating more funds to other local worthy causes, like KIDS Strut and Pelican Trust, throughout the year.”

Lincoln Business Club meets at Lincoln City Football Club on the last Friday of every month at 7am. The next meeting is Friday 24th February and costs £3 which includes free tea and coffee.

Handlebar, walrus and Fu Manchu – these are all types of moustaches, some of which are being sported by members of Lincoln Business Club who have managed to raise over £900 for men’s health charities by growing facial hair!

In October the club decided to take part in the annual Movember campaign to help raise vital funds and awareness for men’s health, specifically prostate cancer and other cancers that affect men.

Eleven members volunteered to join the Lincoln Business Club Movember team and between them they have raised an impressive £923.

Since its humble beginnings in Melbourne Australia, Movember has grown to become a truly global movement inspiring more than 1.1 million Mo Bros and Mo Sistas to participate. Campaigns take place in Australia, New Zealand, the US, Canada, the UK, Finland, the Netherlands, Spain, South Africa and Ireland.

The funds raised in the UK support the number one and two male-specific cancers – prostate and testicular cancer. The funds raised are directed to programmes run directly by Movember and their men’s health partners, The Prostate Cancer Charity and the Institute of Cancer Research.

Mo Bro and Chairman Richard Hare said Movember very much reflects the ethos of the club: “Lincoln Business Club is a voluntary organisation which provides networking opportunities for the city’s business community and donates the majority of members’ entrance and sponsorships fees to good causes.

“We’re always keen to take part in fundraising activities such as Movember and are very grateful to our members who support us either by taking part or making a donation.

“This is the first year the club has taken part in Movember and I’m delighted that we’ve managed to raise such a fantastic sum of money. Congratulations to everyone involved!”

Sophie Adams (21), a third-year graphic design student from the University of Lincoln, has
been crowned the winner of a competition to design a new logo for the Lincoln Business
Club.

Six third-year students entered the competition and on Friday the club’s members were invited to
chose their favourite design from the two which had been shortlisted by the club’s committee.
Following the expansion of the club, which now has over 650 members, and incorporation of a new
committee the Lincoln Business Club felt it was time to bring the organisation more up to date with
a new logo and website.

Committee member Andy Clayton explained: “Whilst discussing the rebranding of the club several
committee members came up with the idea of launching a competition in conjunction with the
University of Lincoln to enable their third-year graphic design students to show off their creative
talents.

“The students were asked to create a logo which best reflected the club as modern, professional
and approachable, with a simple yet eye-catching design. We were very impressed by the
standard of all the entries we received but on the day it was a unanimous decision and Sophie’s logo won over 80 per cent of the votes.”
Sophie’s simple, contemporary design consisted of a ring made up of purple circles which passes
through the organisation’s boldly printed name.

“My design symbolises the various businesses coming together through Lincoln Business Club,”
explained Sophie who is from Folkestone, Kent.

“These circles can also be seen as looking down on people in a meeting seated around a round
table and coming together. Circles are also known for symbolising something being whole and
joining as one – an ideal very much associated with Lincoln Business Club.”

Following the creation of the logo, Sophie also had to show how it would look on the Lincoln
Business Club website and stationery, as the design will be used on the new website, social media
pages, business cards, letterheads and exhibition banners.

The next Lincoln Business Club meeting will be the AGM on Friday 29th July at 7am at
Lincoln City FC. As well as the holding the annual elections, the club will present cheques
for £150 each to Candles, a Lincoln-based cancer charity, and the British Heart Foundation.
